Ervin Technologies

Development and Promotion of Advanced Metal Powders

Ervin Technologies in Tecumseh, Michigan focuses on the research and development of fine metal particles that lead to innovations in metal powder technologies. Our RSR (Rapid Solidification Rate) atomization process allows Ervin to develop a wide variety of Advanced Metal Powders for many industries and applications. This know-how enables us to collaborate with a wide range of industries and research professionals to advance spherical metal powder technology.

TECHNICAL CAPABILITIES

Scanning Electron Microscope

Utilizing state of the art equipment, our team at Ervin Technologies analyzes the characteristics of microscopic particles. The scanning electron microscope (SEM) helps to determine particle morphology (the shape, sphericity and presence of satellites.)

This powerful microscope allows us to observe the crystalline structures at the surface of the particle, which can indicate properties such as corrosion resistance, magnetics and chemistry.

Other Technical Capabilities:

  • Metal particle production via centrifugal atomization
  • Specialized thermal treatment – phase annealing, stress relief, de-carburization and controlled oxidation, precision machining, grinding, sizing and finishing of fine metal particles
  • Process development and control
  • Atomic emission spectroscopy
  • Particle size analysis
  • Hardness measurement
  • Energy dispersive spectroscopy
  • Optical light microscopy
  • Leco analysis of carbon, sulfur, oxygen, and nitrogen

CUSTOMIZED APPLICATIONS

Ervin’s R&D division has developed innovative products in many customized applications including:

  • Additive manufacturing (3D printing, metal injection
    molding or MIM)
  • Aerospace and automotive materials
  • Thermal sprays
  • Radiation shielding
  • Advanced battery powder
  • Hot isostatic pressing (HIP)
  • Rare earth powders
  • Frangible bullets
Scanning electron microscope (SEM)
Utilizing a microhardness tester to determine the internal hardness of “decarbed” materials in Vickers.
The LECO machines are capable of determining the carbon, sulfur, oxygen and nitrogen content in Ervin’s fine metal powders which enables our team to certify that the products made conform to ASM chemistry specifications.
